The 34-year-old is currently unsure of his future at Stamford Bridge with Jose Mourinho looking to use John Obi Mikel and Steve Sidwell in the midfield more often, meaning the Frenchman would not be played as much as he would like.
With Bordeaux looking likely to sign Alou Diarra from Lyon, it seems that the Pompey gaffer is looking to other players who can break down opposition attacks and pass the ball to a team mate and there's been nobody better than Makelele over the years in doing this job.
Whilst this is only speculation at the moment, I'd love to see someone of Makelele's pedigree join Pompey. His presence would be much needed if we're hanging on to a lead or playing away from home when we need to be tighter.
