Hammers Deliver Knockout Blow

Last updated : 26 December 2008 By Jim Bonner
Pompey fans' Christmas was ruined by West Ham and Craig Bellamy in particular after more woeful defending saw the home side collapse and increase the pressure on Tony Adams.

Having been hammered by Newcastle at Fratton Park less than two weeks ago, Pompey suffered another three goal defeat that has tested the supporters' patience to the limit after another second half capitulation.

It had all started so well too as Nadir Belhadj scored his second goal for the club after Peter Crouch headed back Glen Little's cross across the box, allowing the Algerian to tap in.

Pompey dominated but gifted the visitors an equaliser after the defence fell asleep and were caught out by a quick free kick on the side of the box. The ball quickly made its way to Jack Collison who unleashed a shot that went straight through everyone in the box and into the back of the net.

That undid all of Pompey's good work in the first half but there were still chances created as Green saved Crouch's volley and Sean Davis had his effort saved. Lucas Neill then bundled over Crouch in the area on the stroke of half-time and up stepped Jermain Defoe...

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have chosen a player who looked disinterested and hadn't been in the game at all to take the penalty against his former club no less. The outcome was inevitable as the former Hammer placed his effort wide to the dismay of all Pompey fans.

Once again, the blues began the second half brightly but couldn't find the breakthrough and were then punished as Carlton Cole scored for the Hammers against the run of play after Craig Bellamy instigated a counter-attack

The floodgates opened and the Pompey players lost all sense of organisation as Bellamy scored twice more on the break to see a section of the home support leave early whilst the majority of those who stayed booed the team off come the final whistle.

To lose 3-0 to Newcastle was bad enough but be defeated 4-1 by another struggling side having gone a goal up and having missed a penalty to re-take the lead is an utter disgrace.

Sol Campbell was as slow and sluggish as ever, Distin looks disinterested, Belhadj may have been good going forward but lacks defensive discipline and should be played further forward whilst I don't believe Marc Wilson is ready for the Premier League yet as he looked a bit out of his depth today.

Our midfield is also a major cause for concern. Hughes and Davis have plenty of heart but no footballing brain, Kranjcar still looks off the pace and Little doesn't have any pace at all.

They all lack the presence the likes of Muntari and Diarra had last season and also lack organisation when the opposition have the ball for a sustained period of time.

And I actually feel sorry for Peter Crouch who has been by far our best player since Glen Johnson has been injured as he has had to do a lot of work with a strike partner who just doesn't seem to care anymore.

I think Defoe may have played his last game for the club. I can see Adams going 4-5-1 at Arsenal on Sunday with Crouch up front on his own and Defoe will be sold in January soon after.

Adams needs to sort it out fast. He needs to get out the players who don't want to play for us anymore and bring in players who will play for the shirt. Whether he will be given the time and the money to buy the players he wants remains to be seen but if the problem isn't addressed then we could well find ourselves relegated.

It's a depressing situation isn't it? What should have been a fantastic season following our FA Cup triumph has now turned into a relegation scrap thanks largely to a disloyal manager. Now the current boss is left to pick up the pieces but is the damage already too great?
