Fulham Continue Pompey Freefall

Yet more dismal defending from Portsmouth sees the slide down the table continue with fans wondering if the rot is ever going to stop.

Three goals courtesy of some poor communication at the back has seen Tony Adams add another defeat to his managerial record and yesterday was the first time I heard a large group of Pompey fans chant "we want Adams out".

You'd think that as one of the best centre backs of his generation, Adams would have taught the Pompey defenders two of the most vital things about defending. The first one is not to defend too deep against players with pace and the second one is the offside rule that both Distin and Kaboul seemed to forget yesterday.

Take the first goal for example; the Pompey backline are caught too far upfield and Clint Dempsey's through ball caught out Sylvain Distin and allowed Andrew Johnson to run clean through on our goal and slot past David James.

The second goal was similar as Pompey made a criminal error in trying to play an offside trap in their own half and that let Erik Nevland run the entire second half of the pitch and score the goal that ultimately killed us off.

The Norweigan striker then made matters worse by punishing more woeful defending by turning in the box and firing past James again although David Nugent grabbed the goal his second half performance deserved after heading in Jermaine Pennant's free kick although it was too little, too late.

Despite the deserved defeat you can't help but feel that the powers that be have it in for Tony Adams. With the score at 1-0 Younes Kaboul headed against the crossbar and we had a blatant penalty turned down with John Paintsil fouled Nugent in the box and then the same player got away with another offence on Crouch not long afterward.

If we had scored that penalty (which was by no means guaranteed given our record with spot kicks this season) then the score is 1-1 and it changes the whole complexion of the game and as the better side at the time, we may have gone on to get something from the game.

But like I said before, when you defend as poorly as we did yesterday then you can only expect defeat but we also have another problem and that's up front when we created more chances than our hosts yet only scored once when it was too late.

The strike partnership of Crouch and Kanu isn't working as there is no pace up top and so the Fulham defence weren't too threatened in the first half. That changed when Dave Nugent arrived and he looks sharper than ever in a Pompey shirt and should start next week against Liverpool.

Fulham had five shots and scored three times whilst we had eleven shots and only scored once. That stat alone sums up the problems that we have at the moment and it's up to Adams to find the parachute to arrest this freefall or else it will be parachute payments next year in the Championship.

That's if Adams is still in charge, of course.
