Although a patched up side performed excellently at the weekend in digging out a result, we can certainly do with a few more bodies at the back. Considering how Linvoy and De Zeeuw were our only fit recognised defenders - with Unsworth and Duffy out on loan - brown trousers time was fast approaching.
But I'm delighted to say that today the previously crocked Dejan Stefanovic and Matt Taylor started training again after the niggles which ruled them out on Saturday. Missing one as cover on the left side of defence is bad luck, missing both had the potential to be more than troublesome - but ironically despite their lack of involvement at St Andrews, we got our first clean sheet in fourteen attempts.
It's a huge relief that the pair are fit to return for Liverpool (or as it seems to have become, "The Forgotten Match") as well as the south coast derby on Sunday - not least Stefanovic who has been making a lot of noises in interviews about wanting to repeat last season's success against Southampton at Fratton Park, and especially after it was rumoured he could miss the rest of the season.
Still, one step at at a time, and it's Wednesday night we've got to think about first. Yakubu is still out injured but having these two back is certainly a big help against a couple of teams who have the potential to cause us trouble. Yes, even Peter Crouch can be a bit of bother from time to time.
