Steve Finnan has reportedly signed a one year deal for Portsmouth after passing a medical at Fratton Park.
The 33-year-old Ireland right back agreed a deal with former club Espanyol to be released a year early from his contract after only making three starts during the season because of injury.
The former Liverpool and Fulham defender would become Paul Hart's first summer signing (as the Mokoena deal is still yet to be officially announced) and wouldn't cost the club a penny in transfer fees.
I always remember Finnan to be one of Liverpool's most solid and consistent performers during his time at Anfield and although he wouldn't fill Glen Johnson's boots in terms of quality, Finnan would be a decent signing if age and his injuries haven't slowed him down in the last year.
Our squad is small enough as it is and I don't see it growing dramatically this summer so we can't be having players being constantly injured. But that's my only worry regarding Finnan because I still think he has the experience and the ability to perform at Premier League level.
This is also sensible business on the club's behalf as we have a quality full back signed up for only a year because of his age and injury problems and so won't be forced to pay him if things don't work out. If he proves himself then he may well earn another year.
Welcome to Pompey, Steve.
