In shock news, one of Pompey's earliest traditions will be scrapped in favour of a new mascot. The Pompey sailor is to be replaced with Captain Birdseye, who will circle the ground before kick off in one of the agreements settled with Birdseye last week.

Captain Birdseye (pictured left) shot to fame in a series of adverts where he always seemed to have a crew of young 'uns on his ship, singing and enjoying his fish fingers while he had a word with their mums. It is thought he will parade around the ground in a costume to rival Nelson's. The deal with Birdseye ensures that Pompey will only have one sailor representing them and the image on top of the Sportsmail of the sailor with his thumb up or down depending on the result will also be replaced with the hearty seadog. Currently adverts are running in 'The Stage' to audition for the part of Captain Birdseye for the pictures. Applicants must be rotund, have a jolly face and a massive beard.

As well as the Captain himself, Pompey fans are to be subjected to his famous fish fingers in the food halls around the ground. Instead of the normal hot dogs or pies, the Fratton Faithful will be able to eat fish fingers, fish cakes and some of Birdseye's newest range, including: Zesty Garlic Chicken in a box, Oriental Lo Mein or Strawberries dipped in syrup.

A Pompey spokesman told us that "The Club are very excited about the possibilities of the three year deal with Birdseye. Apart from the Captain and his fish fingers, we are particualry excited about the marketing potential considering our new deal with TY Europe, the maker of beanie babies."
