Everton vs Pompey Preview

Last updated : 04 May 2007 By Jim Bonner
Ladies and Gentleman, it's time for the main event of the season! Pompey travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton knowing a victory will take them above the Toffees and put them a prime position for a UEFA Cup spot.

Just like last season, Pompey fans travel to the North-West for the penultimate game of the season filled with hope, but maybe not so much expectation this time round given that we're playing a team renowned for being jammy and very difficult to beat at home. So if it wasn't difficult enough already then it doesn't help that we have quite a few injury problems too.

Joe Jordan has said that Sol Campbell may stand an outside chance of playing again this season and possibly tomorrow but it would be safe to assume that he's out. Dejan Stefanovic, Matt Taylor and Richard Hughes are all struggling too and are major doubts for the match, meaning we could play a severely weakened backline on Saturday.

Lauren looks set to continue at right midfield with Sean Davis and Gary O'Neil in the centre. Should Taylor not make it, Niko Kranjcar will start on the left and Benjani should start up front with Kanu. Pedro Mendes is finally back from injury and is likely to start on the bench, as well as Svetoslav Todorov who is also back from injury.

If our injury problems weren't bad enough, there's more bad news for us as Andy Johnson could start for Everton after an ankle injury. Former Pompey loanee Manuel Fernandes looks certain to play against us too and it wouldn't surprise you in the slightest if he scored the winner would it?

Still, there's no point in playing for a draw in this game like we previously did at Villa Park as it's likely that a draw will be no good if results fail to go our way, which they probably will as Reading host Watford tomorrow. If we play negative football then all we'll do is invite Everton pressure on ourselves and their jam factor will ensure they win via a deflection, last minute winner or dodgy penalty.

Everton have lost their last two games, so if we go out and state our intent by attacking them, then it could rattle them and frustrate the home crowd. Whatever happens tomorrow, one set of supporters will be going home knowing that their team will not, in all likelihood be playing in Europe next season...

....unless it's a draw of course!

Premiership Past: Everton vs Pompey

03/04: Everton 1 Pompey 0

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal in this dull, uninspiring game that added more woe to Pompey's relegation battle. The irony is that we still finished above them this season despite being doubled by the Toffees.

04/05: Everton 2 Pompey 1

Alan Stubbs headed in from a corner but Yakubu equalised with a classy goal and it looked like Pompey were going to hold on for a draw until Leon Osman popped up with a winner in the 4th minute of a 2 minute stoppage time period which caused many a Pompey fan to shout obscenities at the officials as we had been well and truly robbed.

05/06: Everton 0 Pompey 1

The boot was finally on the other foot and it was Pompey who got the luck as Big Duncan Ferguson headed into his own net to give us our first Premiership win over the blue half of Merseyside and Alain Perrin's first win of the season.
