European Tour

One of the biggest prizes for winning the FA Cup was that Portsmouth FC will begin their very own venture into Europe next season by participating in the UEFA Cup.

As the FA Cup winners, Pompey have directly qualified for the first round of the tournament so won't have to bother with the previous qualifying rounds and will be joined by 79 other teams from various obscure European nations.

The first round is a straight knock out before the group stages and depending on seeding we could find ourselves going to the San Siro, home of AC Milan come September.

There are some other big names already in the first round such as Valencia, Benfica, Ajax and Feyenoord whilst the likes of Barcelona and Juventus still have to qualify for the Champions League and should they fail, then these giants of European football may be playing at Fratton Park next season!

Should we make it through the first round then we will be drawn into a group with four other teams and must play two of them at Fratton Park and two of them on the continent. So whilst we may relish a trip to Paris, Milan or Amsterdam there's always a chance we will end up playing in Bratislava or Motherwell.

Whilst the prospect of playing in Europe is exciting it will come at a price; the traditional Saturday 3pm kick-off.

With the majority of UEFA Cup games being played on Thursday we will play the following league game on the Sunday. Is that such a big price to pay? I'm not sure but I'm certainly willing to find out!

I hope that our European campaign lasts more than one round and doesn't affect our league performances next season. Whatever happens I'm sure the Pompey fans will take Europe by storm.

P.S: Whoever has Jamie Ashdown's and Glen Johnson's medal can you please give them back? Stealing something like that is almost as bad as kidnapping!
