Andy Awford has watched Michael Drennan play for Aston Villa reserves recently, suggesting he could return to Pompey on loan with his parent club looking to loan him out again.
Pompey seem to have a problem with their strikers at the moment as none of them are prolific goalscorers. Craig Westcarr hasn't scored in five league games, Miles Storey hasn't been given enough playing time to score regularly, Patrick Agyemang and Ryan Taylor have never hit the net regularly in their careers whilst Tom Craddock and David Connolly are out of the picture.
But is Drennan really the answer to Pompey's goalscoring problems?
Probably not, in all honesty. He only scored three goals during his loan spell at the club last season with two of them coming in arguably his only outstanding performance at Dagenham back in April. Is he better than Awford already has?
Again, probably not. He's not the sort of striker who can hang around the box and poach goals from nothing. Pompey need a player like that; someone who can score a header from a set-piece or a cross as well as have a knack of being in the right place at the right time.
Reuben Reid would have fit the bill perfectly but he opted to join Plymouth and yet he was only a loanee from Yeovil last season. There has to be other players out there like him and Awford needs to find someone like that to cure Pompey's goalscoring problem.
And that someone isn't Drennan as he simply didn't do enough last season to suggest he'll make an impact on what is a stronger Portsmouth squad this season.
