Drawthorns

Pompey took a point from West Brom yesterday thanks to a deflected leveller from Peter Crouch after Jonathan Greening gave the Baggies a first half lead.

The phrase "game of two halves" could well be applied to this one as Pompey were absolutely abysmal in the first half against a side who showed why they were bottom of the league.

The defending was sloppy and on more than one occasion the hosts should have scored, especially when Chris Brunt was through on goal thanks to some kamikaze defending from our centre backs.

Whilst he may have curled his effort wide, his free kick crashed the crossbar (similar to Kranjcar's on Thursday) but Greening was there to tap the ball into the net and give Albion a deserved lead.

Tony Adams must have had a very strong word with the team at the interval because Pompey were a completely different side and drew level thanks to Crouch's long-range shot deflecting above Scott Carson and into the net.

I thought we got stronger as the half went on and there was only going to be one team that was going to win it. Glen Johnson somehow managed to sky his shot after a one-two with Defoe whilst Carson almost managed to palm a cross into his own net.

A draw was probably a fair result in the end but whether this is a good point or not depends on which way you look at it. On the face of it, we've only a managed a draw against the bottom side in the league and a team that I'm 99% certain will get relegated this season.

From an objective viewpoint though, it's not such a bad point considering we were coming off a dire defensive display at Wolfsburg and only had one training session to prepare for the match. The draw has also taken us up a position into 7th although we have lost ground on Villa and Hull.

Adams needs to get us playing for the full 90 minutes though, because it seems to me that we either start a match on the front foot and then allow the opposition back into it, or we're awful in the first half but much better when the players have had a kick up the arse.

If Tony can address this balance, then there's no reason why we can't have a half-decent season despite the setbacks we have had already.
