Sean Davis has signed a three-year contract with Bolton Wanderers as expected after rejecting a new deal with Pompey.
Trotters manager Gary Megson revealed that he had offered £3.5 million for the midfielder in January but the bid was turned down. On the face of it it seems like Pompey may have missed out on a significant amount of money back then but without Davis we faced a huge risk of going down and therefore risked losing out on at least £40 million.
Whilst I'm not too pleased with his comments about playing somewhere "where he'll be appreciated" I think Sean was a consistent player who did an excellent job at breaking up play but was very average in all other aspects of his game.
He gave his all for Portsmouth and I'll applaud him when he and Taylor come back to Fratton Park with Bolton but now we must find a replacement which looks like coming in the form of Blackburn's Aaron Mokoena.
The South African claimed he'd signed a three-year-deal with Pompey a while ago now but it has still yet to be confirmed by Portsmouth. I thought he played quite well for Bafana Bafana during the Confederations Cup but Blackburn fans don't seem to care about losing him so I wouldn't feel too strongly either way if we did end up adding "the axe" to our squad.
Portsmouth have also released five players and whilst I don't care about Djimi Traore, Lauren, Jerome Thomas or Glen Little I do think Noe Pamarot could have offered something as a squad player.
This cull has now reduced the squad to a wafer thin 21 first team players and from them I only see around five or six good enough to play for a team aiming for the top half of the Premier League.
It's going to be a very interesting July...
