Cup Clash sparks memory of 92 Cup Run
Last updated : 03 January 2002 By
A year into his reign at Fratton Park, a highly respected manager who put his faith in youth took Pompey into the semi final's of the FA cup after dispatching Leyton Orient in the early rounds. The next year his team nearly got promoted into the promised land of the Premiership.
This was ten years ago now and the manager at that time was Jim Smith - take away the nearly and who's to say we won't be saying this about Graham Rix next year? The similarities are scarily similar and Pompey fans ae hoping that history could repeat itself with a good cup run this year followed by an assault on the league next year.

Pompey's clash with Leyton Orient ten years actually took place in the fourth round but idealists will be happy to bypass this fact if it means that fate has finally took hold of Pompey's season and is about to give it a jolt in the right direction. It was Darren Anderton who stole the show that day with two wonder strikes infront of the Match of the Day cameras. Des Lynam's words that night were: "A star is born" will he be repeating those words for the likes of Courtney Pitt or Gary O'Neil on Saturday?
Fratton Faithful's full match preview will appear as usual on Friday but it's always nice to reminisce...leave your own memories on the message board.
