Following Chesterfield's play-off sem-final defeat to Preston today, the path is now clear for Paul Cook to be appointed as the new manager of Portsmouth.
It's virtually certain that the 48-year-old will become the new Pompey boss this week as reports and local hear-say have suggested that he applied for the job when Andy Awford was sacked and was the Portsmouth board's unanimous first choice to take the club forward.
He supposedly would have left the Spireites whether they won promotion or not as he reportedly agreed a deal before the end of the season but their 4-0 aggregate defeat to North End has certainly made the decision easier. Further evidence of Cook's arrival would be that Martin Allen, considered to be the board's second choice, has just signed a new contract at Barnet.
Expect to hear an announcement early this forthcoming week, perhaps even tomorrow, about Paul Cook's appointment as the new manager of Portsmouth FC.
