The 100th Anniversary of the Community Shield was marked by defeat on penalties for Pompey who had held the Premier League and European Champions for 90 minutes.
The managers referred to the game as a pre-season friendly and the game certainly felt that way in terms of atmosphere as Wembley lacked the tension, excitement and fervour of the two cup encounters despite the huge pre-match build up.
I felt the game itself was a competitive affair. It's fair to say that United shouldn't have needed penalties to defeat us after a couple of glaring misses (especially the one from Darren Fletcher) but then David James was an excellent last line of defence as usual.
Jamo's performance was topped with a fine save from Carlos Tevez late in the game and his display was one of the biggest positives to take from the match yesterday.
Other positives were our defending in general bar the few times when United got through, Sylvain Distin was excellent considering he was often covering for Sol Campbell, Lassana Diarra was arguably the best player on the pitch whilst Papa Bouba Diop also had a very good game considering where he was playing.
Unfortunately there were a fair few negatives too.
As Joe Jordan mentioned, we played with absolutely no width all game. Niko Kranjcar barely saw the ball whilst we all know that Diop isn't a wide man.
We barely created anything at all and although we were up against two of the best centre halves in the world, lumping it forward to our anonymous front two was just making it easy for Ferdinand and Vidic.
Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe played too close together and didn't seem to have an understanding. United were quick to close them down meaning they had no time to pass and Crouch's flick-ons were easily being read by the opposition's back four.
And then of course, we still haven't sorted out our penalty taking problem of last campaign.
Defoe knows how to score from the spot but the only real "great" penalty taker we had last season we ended up selling to Inter Milan. The three penalties taken yesterday by Diarra, Mvuemba and Johnson were woeful.
I'll admit that I was more disappointed than most that we blew our chance of some silverware yesterday as we may never compete for the Shield again for quite some time. However, if you offered me victory over United yesterday or in two weeks time at Fratton Park I would have said the latter every time.
Still, our final pre-season fixture has given Harry Redknapp plenty of food for thought. Carlos Tevez and Nani posed a major threat with their pace that Campbell struggled to deal with so hopefully the addition of Kaboul to the squad can help that.
I also hope that Harry has one or two wingers lined up and that Niko's poor Wembley showing wasn't because he had his mind elsewhere. Defoe and Crouch need to keep working together too as right now they look a bit too one-dimensional.
If these problems are addressed then we could have another fantastic season.

Papa Bouba Diop: 7 - Played very well considering his position.
Lassana Diarra: 8 - Poor penalty will overshadow a brilliant all-round showing.
