Club Vs Country

I was talking to a few work colleagues today about the England team when one of my colleagues asked the following burning question:

"Would you accept England failing to qualify for the World Cup in 2010 if it meant Pompey winning another major trophy this year?"

I didn't even have to think about the answer to that question and immediately replied: "Yes!" which was met with disgust by another of my colleagues who asked me "How can you say that? Are you telling me that you support your club ahead of your nation?"

As I looked outside as it was chucking it down with rain again I said: "Of course, even now the England team have a Portsmouth presence I would still rather watch my club lift the FA Cup again than the national side win the World Cup."

It's true. If you offered me a 10-0 thrashing of Croatia tomorrow from the Three Lions or a scrappy own goal to settle a dire Pompey match with Middlesbrough on Saturday I would choose the latter.

My colleague labelled me as "unpatriotic" but I asked him what is there possibly to like about this country? The weather is awful, the women aren't as pretty as their foreign counterparts, the economy is in danger of meltdown and we've got a clueless, uncharismatic numpty in charge of us. Basically England is a bigger version of Southampton.

Many of my fellow Pompey fans agreed but then one of them asked "Whatever you think of our country, you've still gotta support the team that is representing your homeland, right?"

I told him that it isn't as easy for me (and many other fans) to cheer players that I would happily jeer when they play for their clubs. I have virtually no respect for serial money-grabbers such as Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard whilst Wayne Rooney has always irritated me too.

To me, watching these dislikeable, over-paid "stars" massively underachieve is not a true representation of our country. I would like our players to show a bit of fight and passion and to really feel like they are honoured to wear the shirt.

I still can't understand why Jimmy Bullard didn't start against Andorra on Saturday. He isn't the most talented player in the world but he always gives 110% and gives the midfield an added "oomph".

I can't help but admire his character after he came back from that horrid injury to galvanise his club into an extremely unlikely escape from relegation. His inclusion into the team to play a bunch of part-timers would have added an extra interest in the game and would have done his confidence the world of good too.

The main reason I will be tuning in tomorrow is to see how much the England players care when they are up against a superior side in Zagreb (I don't buy Harry's recent comments on how none of their players would make England's first team). That's if they don't play us off the park.

I just don't get that buzz of excitement when England play that I always get before Pompey kick off. It's not just about the boring football they play and the media's obsession with the team but I'll just never relate to the prima donnas like Cashley and Rooney and I'll never have that sense of pride when England win a game compared to when Portsmouth do.

The sad thing is that I don't know what the FA or the current England players can do to force me to support my country over my club. Perhaps if Capello picked players who are desperate to play for their country and showed some guts on the pitch then I might care more.

However, the bottom line is that I don't think its possible for me to put my country ahead of my club.

After all, I have poured many pounds and hours into supporting the club I love (even though it is getting harder every year) and I will always value Pompey pride over national pride.

But what about you? Take part in the latest poll to see just how patriotic Pompey fans really are.
