Chelsea Put Four Past Pompey Again

Last updated : 25 September 2008 By Jim Bonner
For the second time this season, Chelsea have beaten Pompey 4-0 to knock us out of the Carling Cup thanks to some truly embarrassing defending.

Harry may have fielded a weakened side but David James, Sylvain Distin, Glen Johnson, Nadir Belhadj and Peter Crouch all started in a 4-5-1 system designed to contain the opposition (Ha!)

The visitors strolled to victory after the floodgates opened when Belhadj made a clumsy challenge on Michael Ballack in the box. Redknapp is claiming Ballack dived but you knew as soon as Belhadj went to ground that the ref was going to point to the spot.

We had held our own up until that point but once Frank Lampard struck the spot kick home there was only going to be one winner. That was virtually confirmed when Florent Malouda smashed in a second goal right before half time but the truly awful defending began in the second half.

David James failed to deal with a cross and allowed Lampard to tap in the third goal. The entire ground was silenced after that went in as nobody (inclduing the Chelsea players) thought the goal had been given.

But the ball hadn't gone out of play and there was no offside given and Lampard was so embarassed about the affair that he apologised for scoring! Jamo will not want to remember that howler that's for sure....

The rout was complete when Distin's piss poor clearance hit a Chelsea player in the box and set up Salomon Kalou for an easy finish. The Chelsea fans began chanting "We want seven!" which was responded to by chants of "We want one!" by the Pompey fans.

There were no real chances for Pompey fans to get excited about as Redknapp opted for the 4-5-1 system with Crouch up front on his own. The poor bloke had no support all game despite working hard but still doesn't look like an £11 million player.

Pompey pride has been well and truly damaged after this result. That's ten goals conceded in two games which doesn't bode well for Sunday's game against Spurs.

I'm sure the people who were critical of our tight, attritional style of play last season would welcome it back with open arms after the way we have defended so far this season.

I'm not too worried about the fact we're out of the Carling Cup as the league and the UEFA Cup are more important. However, Harry and Tony need to sort out this shambles fast before it becomes a serious problem.
