Pompey suffered an embarrassing home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers tonight as they crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
The League Two side were ahead after just 13 seconds after Joel Grant curled the ball past Simon Eastwood almost straight from kick-off.
Jo Kuffour then took the ball past lumbering Lubor Michalik and struck the post with his effort just minutes after as the Pompey defence were nowhere to be seen.
Some comical defending saw the Chairboys double their lead less than ten minutes into the game. Kuffour shot twice from close range as Eastwood saved the first effort and the second being scuffed into the path of Dean Morgan who struck the ball hard enough to force it over the line despite Jon Harley's best attempts to keep it out.
Wycombe were giving Pompey plenty of space to attack which always yielded some hope and Gabor Gyepes came close to reducing the deficit but his goalbound header from Brian Howard's corner was tipped over by Nikki Bull.
Kuffour then had plenty of time to run at our defence and curl another shot against the post with Pompey caught out when commiting too many men forward.
The home side were given a lifeline in first half stoppage time when a quick throw in caught out the visitors' defence and Izale McLeod pounced on a loose ball from two yards out.
However, just like Saturday's showing, the second half saw Pompey regress and struggle to open up a tighter Wycombe side.
And the game was essentially over when Adam Webster tripped Bruno Andrade in the box to concede a penalty. Eastwood saved Morgan's spot kick but he headed in the rebound to book Wycombe's passage through to the next round.
A disjointed Pompey tried to get back into the game but stray passes and some good defending from the opposition saw Michael Appleton's men suffer a humiliating defeat.
Whilst people will say "It's only the pisspot trophy" it is still unacceptable to lose at home to a team that is struggling in the division below. Wycombe's nimble frontmen had too much pace for the labouring Pompey back line and so it's no wonder they looked so dangerous on the counter-attack.
The terrible defending and lacklustre passing is a serious issue ahead of Saturday's more important game with Crewe. After that performance tonight I can see another defeat on the horizon.
