Cave In

A weakened Pompey conceded two goals in two minutes during the last ten minutes of the game at White Hart Lane to suffer their first double of the season at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Jermain Defoe, Sulley Muntari, Papa Bouba Diop, Sol Campbell, Lauren and Lassana Diarra all missed the game and so it was up to a diluted team playing the 4-5-1 system to get a result today.

Even though the hosts had most of the possession, we defended fairly well although Spurs came close to hitting the target a few times during the first half as Chimbonda fired his effort just wide and Dawson crashed the crossbar.

Despite their chances it was Pompey who came closest to scoring in the first half as Sean Davis' chip was punched over the bar by Paul Robinson. In the second half we'd get an even better chance as Robinson rushed out of his goal and all Kanu had to do was put more power in his header to beat him and put the ball into an empty net but instead it was too weak and Zokora cleared off the line.

It looked like we would contain Tottenham and earn a draw but our lack of ambition ended up costing us as Darren Bent nodded in a jammy goal on the 80th minute after Berbatov scuffed his shot.

Then in true Pompey fashion we conceded a second goal almost straight from the restart after a long ball allowed Darren Bent to play the ball across the box that Jamie O'Hara tapped in after Berbatov missed it. Game Over.

I've not got any complaints about the result as you're asking for trouble if you invite a team with the attacking talent of Tottenham onto you. It seems the curse of White Hart Lane had hit the squad before the game this time and you can't expect too much when you are missing six quality players from your squad.

Still, I do think Harry could have introduced Milan Baros or David Nugent earlier in the game when Tottenham looked tired but I guess they weren't going to be risked with the FA Cup Semi only two weeks away.

This result means that our task of catching Everton has been made even harder as they got a point today but we stay sixth as neither Villa nor Man City won games that they probably should have.

Let's hope these injuries clear up in time for the trip to Wembley otherwise West Brom will be up against a team consisting of a skeleton without a spine.

In other news, Glen Johnson has retained his place in the England squad after an impressive performance today. However, Jermain Defoe has been surprisingly dropped despite scoring 6 goals in 6 games. Whatever happened to being picked on form?
