Pompey's miserable season continued with a tame 1-0 defeat at Broadhall Way to Stevenage tonight.
Gary Waddock decided to shake things up by playing a 4-4-2 formation with Nicky Shorey at left back with Dan Butler playing further forward. Jed Wallace was missing with a hamstring injury which further diminished Portsmouth's chances of getting anything from the match.
Once again, an early goal proved to be Pompey's undoing as Tom Pett gave the hosts the lead after just three minutes with a strike from outside the box after Pompey had failed to clear a free kick.
Those who were at the game claim Pompey were just as terrible as they have been for many of their away matches this season. The second half saw an improvement as Craig Westcarr, on as a sub for the injured Ryan Taylor, had a goal disallowed for offside.
The defeat always seemed inevitable, though, and the final whistle blew to confirm Pompey's eleventh defeat on the road in the league and a twelth away game where they have failed to score.
The result keeps Portsmouth in 14th place in League Two although they could fall as far as 18th if they lose to Bury and results go against them.
As for Andy Awford's permanent replacement, Phil Brown is now the current favourite after he refused to comment on speculation on his future at Southend with Iain McInnes reportedly interested in his services.
Just three more miserable weekends to go before we can kiss this awful season goodbye.
