Bolton vs Portsmouth Preview

Last updated : 19 December 2008 By Jim Bonner
A trip to Bolton is never the most exciting thing in the world, but it may be the most important come Saturday with three valuable points at stake which could drastically change the direction our season takes for 2009.

We may be 8th in the league but should we get beaten by Gary Megson's mob tomorrow then not only will they leap us, but we could fall as low as 12th and look very nervously over our shoulders as we could be just two points above the drop zone.

On the other hand, a win will see Pompey leap Everton into 7th (temporarily) and will ease the pressure already starting to build on Tony Adams after that wretched 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle last Sunday.

One person who will be itching to get on the scoresheet tomorrow will be Matthew Taylor who missed a couple of sitters against us last season. Another ex-Pompey player in Andy O'Brien will also feature but Bolton's biggest threat will be Johan Elmander who has come to the Trotter's rescue many times already this season with his goals.

Tony Adams will bring back the big guns for this crunch encounter so James, Campbell, Distin, Kranjcar, Davis and Defoe will all return to the side. Glen Johnson may be fit enough to feature but Younes Kaboul, Armand Traore and John Utaka are all injured.

This is a massive game and the result will really change the mood around Portsmouth one way or another. Win and everything is fine until the transfer window opens, lose and the "Adams Out" bandwagon will be playing a much louder tune.

Last Time: Bolton Wanderers 0 Pompey 1

Pompey were battered at the Reebok for most of the game with Matty Taylor missing from two yards as well as some other good chances, with shots also being blocked on the line and saved by David James.

But then Lassana Diarra scored a goal that should have been ruled offside and Jamo performed a wondersave to deny Tamir Cohen at the death and complete the ultimate steal.

Pundit Watch

Lawro: Draw (1-1)
Sky Sports: Draw (1-1)
Soccernet: Draw

My Prediction: Adams has said it's time Pompey went back to basics and kept a clean sheet, but I don't see that happening. On the other hand, if we can't score against a defence that has Andy O'Brien in it then we deserve to lose.

Bolton Wanderers 1 Pompey 1
