Merson, who still has one-year to run on his current deal at Fratton Park, is thought to be upset that recent signings Teddy Sheringham and Patrik Berger have been offered better deals with Pompey than what he has.
“I’ve spoken to Walsall and they are the only club I’ve spoken to. Walsall haven’t got any money, so it’s up to Portsmouth if they want to do a deal," Merson told the Express & Star.
“I’m not desperate to get away from Portsmouth, and if they want me I’ll be back next season.
“Harry Redknapp says he wants to keep me but at this time it’s also about what’s right for me. Travelling is a big issue but if it has to be done I’ll do it.
“I’m disappointed. I came here last season and took a massive wage cut, and now I see big-name players coming in on massive money.
“I didn’t see too many of them here last season. At the end of the season Portsmouth said they were not able to give me a new deal, then all of a sudden they’re bringing in people on bigger money than me.
“It’s about being wanted but it’s also your worth.”
