Peter Crouch, affectionately known by football fans up and down the country as "the freak" due to his immense height, could be set for a return to Fratton Park according to sources. Admittedly most of those sources are the papers and gutter rags, but word out of Fratton Park also suggests that Perrin might be interested in signing the six foot seven Southampton player.
Crouch played for Portsmouth in 01/02 and scored 19 times, winning player of the season in the process, before moving on to Aston Villa and then Southampton. He's done well for himself down the coast despite originally being booed for his Pompey connections, grabbing sixteen goals and even being called up for the England tour of the USA this summer.
With Kevin Phillips seemingly also set to leave St Mary's it would be surprising if Peter Crouch stayed on in the lower leagues following relegation. If we could get him back I'd certainly welcome the move since he's good in the air and is very under-rated on the deck, and he's proved he can produce the goods in a struggling side. For the rumoured £5m fee I'm not so sure if that's not paying over the odds for a player purely on the basis of recent form, but I get the feeling there could be a bit more to this story yet. But facing competition from Bolton and Blackburn, it won't be easy.
