A Bad Weekend?

Following this weekend's results you could say that Pompey have had a bad weekend even though we didn't play.

Liverpool's visit to hapless Middlesbrough looked like a banker away win but the useless Merseysiders fell to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat. Then Blackburn went to Humberside and beat Hull City 2-1 today to close the gap to Pompey to two points.

Stoke City join Boro and Rovers on 26 points after what should have been a comfortable victory for Aston Villa turned into a draw as the Potters scored two goals in the last five minutes of the match when Villa were cruising at 2-0 up. Where have we seen that before!?

So that now means that those three clubs are within a single win of jumping us in the league. We may have a game in hand on both Boro and Stoke but seeing as that's at Old Trafford we may as well write that one off as I can't see us repeating the heroics of the FA Cup Quarter-Final last season.

Better news was that Newcastle lost at the Reebok although as a result Bolton have extended their lead over us to five points. And of course a certain team managed by a certain Harry Redknapp were also beaten on penalties by Man United to put a smile on the faces of many a Pompey fan.

Still, Tuesday's match against Chelsea seems a lot more important now as if it wasn't important enough already. After that comes a visit to the Riverside to play Middlesbrough in a crucial six-pointer. The pressure has significantly been turned up, can Pompey handle it?
