Portsmouth Season Review 2010/2011: March

Portsmouth were virtually safe from relegation going into March and some of the more optimistic fans were thinking about another push for the play-off places.

Victory over struggling Scunthorpe was crucial to keep the winning run going and a laboured 2-0 victory was sealed courtesy of second half goals from Kitson and Mokoena after the visitors had the better of the first half.

It was a similar story when another relegation battling side in Sheffield United came to Fratton Park the following Saturday as Pompey again struggled to beat a side at the bottom of the league. A Hermann Hreidarsson goal at the start of the game proved to be decisive in the end.

Another clean sheet meant that Pompey's record of consecutive shutouts of 1979 was equalled but a difficult trip to Bristol City was up next, although the game was threatened due to a power outage until it was restored with kick-off looming.

Jamie Ashdown managed to surpass Peter Mellor's post-war record of minutes without conceding at Ashton Gate but was denied the all-time record when Pompey were caught on the counter-attack and Albert Adomah finished the move by slotting the ball into the net.

The Robins doubled their lead when Halford deflected Nicky Maynard's cross into his own goal. Kitson grabbed a consolation in stoppage time after much trying but Pompey tasted defeat for the first time in eight games.

If the vague promotion dream wasn't to fade away then a win over Middlesbrough on the following weekend was a must. Unfortunately a poor performance resulted in a goalless bore draw that saw many fans complain about the style of football employed under Steve Cotterill.

The final game of the month was at one of Pompey's bogey grounds; the Walkers Stadium. However, the curse of Leicester was buried as an early Nugent volley and another dogged defensive display saw the Blues fans celebrate a double over the Foxes for the first time in 81 years.

With just six points seperating Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest in sixth, there was still hope that a play-off berth could be achieved if Reading could be beaten in April.
