March was a month of mixed fortunes for Paul Hart and Pompey but significant points were taken in the fight against relegation.
The month didn't start too well, as Guus Hiddink's Chelsea came to Fratton Park on an extremely wet Tuesday night.
02/03/09: Premier League Matchday #28: Portsmouth 0 Chelsea 1
Sean Davis came close to breaking the deadlock with a stinging long range volley that Petr Cech stunningly saved but the best two chances for Pompey would come in the second half.
David Nugent shot too close to Cech when through on goal and Niko Kranjcar struck wide when he had time and the goal at his mercy after Peter Crouch picked him out with a cross.
Chelsea ultimately made us pay for those missed chances as Didier Drogba was left unmarked and took full advantage of the ball breaking kindly for him to score the winner and leave Pompey fans frustrated after the effort they had seen their team put in.
The board were obviously impressed with the performance as they named Paul Hart and Brian Kidd as the manager and assistant until the end of the season.
With results elsewhere going against us, Pompey had slid into the bottom three of the Premier League ahead of a mammoth clash at Middlesbrough.
14/03/09: Premier League Matchday #29: Middlesbrough 1 Portsmouth 1
Pompey were much the better side during the course of the first half and took the lead when Crouch's volley eluded the Boro defenders and found the net.
The Boro fans turned against their relegation threatened team as the chances fell the way of the away side and in the second half it looked like we would claim the three points when Boro's Matthew Bates was sent off for diving.
But, in true Pompey fashion, in the final minute of stoppage time we failed to defend a corner and although David James saved Marlon King's first effort, he could not prevent the rebound going in as three points became one. Afonso Alves almost made things worse at the death but James managed to block his shot.
Pompey announced that they had reverted to the original plan to rotate Fratton Park to increase its capacity after shelving the Horsea Island plans for the time being.
The final game of the month saw FA Cup Semi-Finalists Everton, with only one defeat from 18 games, visit Fratton Park.
21/03/09: Premier League Matchday #30: Portsmouth 2 Everton 1
This game got off to the worst possible start after Leighton Baines curled in a free kick in the 4th minute but Pompey hit back when Glen Johnson nodded on a corner to Peter Crouch who headed in the equaliser. Jo should have given Everton the lead again but he scuffed his shot when one-on-one with David James.
The second half belonged to Pompey and the possession finally paid off when Younes Kaboul surged down the wing and had his shot saved by Howard only for Crouch to squeeze in a second header.
It may have been three but Sean Davis hit the post with his long range effort but two goals were enough to seal a very important victory for Pompey who recorded their first league double over Everton for many years.
That result gave Pompey some much needed breathing space at the bottom of the league, but there was still much work to be done to avoid the drop.
