Season Review 07/08: October

Last updated : 05 June 2008 By Jim Bonner
With the tough start out of the way, October looked like an easier month than the previous two on paper and so it turned out to be that way.

The month started with a trip to Craven Cottage to play Lawrie Sanchez's beleaguered Fulham side.

07/10/07: Premier League Matchday #9: Fulham 0 Pompey 2

The first half in West London was even as David Healy had a great chance to put the hosts ahead but David James managed to block his effort. Pompey had a couple of chances through Utaka and Muntari but there would be no breakthrough until the second half.

Benjani shrugged off Carlos Bocanegra and his shot from outside the box deflected off the American defender and past Kasey Keller into the net to give Pompey the lead. Then moments later that advantage was doubled when Hermann Hreidarsson combined with Niko Kranjcar on the left leading to the Iceman striking in a second goal in successive games.

Fulham huffed and puffed after that but we were in complete control and saw out the remaining pressure to record another win on the road on a Sunday afternoon.

Sol Campbell would then be made the first Pompey player to be capped for England since Mark Hateley as he played in England's 3-0 win over Estonia and in the 2-1 defeat to Russia after that.

He would then come back to England and play against Wigan as a 40 coach convoy full of Pompey fans travelled to the JJB Stadium to witness the team win away once again.

20/10/07: Premier League Matchday #10: Wigan Athletic 0 Pompey 2

A dire game in the North-West was settled near the end as Benjani continued his scoring run by getting on the end of Sulley Muntari's cross. Glen Johnson made sure of the result after nobody tracked his run down the pitch or tackled him which allowed him to slot in his only goal of the season and pile more pressure on Chris Hutchings.

Before the next home game the club announced it was changing its plans for the new stadium as it was moving from The Hard to Horsea Island. Apparently an announcement on the new stadium is due soon but I won't hold my breath.

27/10/07: Premier League Matchday #11: Pompey 0 West Ham United 0

Portsmouth wasted a golden opportunity to pull away from the chasing pack at Fratton Park as Benjani had his last minute penalty saved by Robert Green.

Prior to that Nobby Solano missed two absolute sitters for the visitors whilst Craig Bellamy was being a tit as per usual. Despite starting brightly the Hammers managed to frustrate us but if Sulley Muntari had taken the penalty as instructed, then I'm sure we would have stolen the win.

Harry Redknapp signed a new contract at the end of October that should keep him at Portsmouth until 2011 but that good news would be dampened on Halloween.

31/10/07: Carling Cup Round #4: Pompey 1 Blackburn Rovers 2

Mark Hughes' men got revenge for their defeat earlier on in the season as goals from Benni McCarthy and Morten Gamst Pedersen were enough to knock Pompey out of the cup. Kanu's last minute goal meant little other than being the last home goal scored at Fratton Park for the rest of the year.
