There were plenty of games in December but many of them would bring disappointing results barring a trip to Villa Park.
The 1st of December brought fellow UEFA Cup place chasing Everton to Fratton Park.
01/12/07: Premier League Matchday #15: Pompey 0 Everton 0
Other than Roger Higgins' blunder when mistaking Everton for "Manchester City" there was nothing else to remember from this utterly dull game.
Stephen Pienaar could have been sent off five times over, Cahill might have also gone for a nasty challenge whilst the closest either side came to scoring was through Kranjcar's missed tap in and Leon Osman miscontrolled the ball when free in the box.
Havant & Waterlooville caused a huge upset by dumping Notts County out of the FA Cup. The third round draw saw Pompey given a tough game at Ipswich who were unbeaten at Portman Road since March but the next league match would see Pompey produce one of their performances of the season.
08/12/07: Premier League Matchday #16: Aston Villa 1 Pompey 3
A little bit of good fortune came our way as Noe Pamarot's mishit strike found Benjani in the box and Craig Gardner's challenge unfortunately deflected the ball into his own net.
Villa piled the pressure on as Martin Laursen missed two great opportunities with headers but they were caught with the ultimate suckerpunch as Sulley Muntari curled in a long range peach of a goal to double Pompey's lead.
In the second half the Ghanian scored an even better goal as he robbed Nigel Reo-Coker of the ball, nutmegged Zat Knight and then unleashed another scorcher past Scott Carson.
Martin O'Neill's side got one back after Distin's clumsy challenge enabled Gareth Barry to convert his penalty but Pompey should have had a fourth but Papa Bouba Diop somehow managed to miss from yards out following a swift counter-attacking move.
After such an impressive performance at one of our bogey grounds you'd think the next game at home to struggling Spurs would have been a win for the home side.
15/12/08: Premier League Matchday #17: Pompey 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1
After an awful first half you'd have thought the second half would have got better but it got worse as Dimitar Berbatov finished from close range. Jermain Defoe almost got a late second against his future employers when he struck the crossbar as Pompey slumped to their first home defeat since March.
We were back on the road next as our superb run away from home would come to an abrupt end at Anfield...
22/12/08: Premier League Matchday #18: Liverpool 4 Pompey 1
Many Pompey fans were confident that a side that had the best away record in the country could take something from Liverpool who had struggled at home.
That confidence soon evaporated after Yossi Benayoun volleyed the Reds into an early lead and then Campbell's clearance bounced off of Sylvain Distin and rolled into the net for an own goal.
Redknapp changed things at half time by bringing on Kanu and it seemed to work as Benjani pulled one back after some good footwork in the box but Fernando Torres showed his class and scored a brace to put the game out of reach.
That result wasn't exactly the confidence booster we needed going into a Boxing Day clash with table toppers Arsenal.
26/12/08: Premier League Matchday #19: Pompey 0 Arsenal 0
A performance of little quality was more than made up for in grit and determination as Pompey held the free scoring Gunners. There were no real chances in the game right until the end when William Gallas shot over from close range and Tomas Rosicky's last minute curler flew wide.
This result meant that Portsmouth were the first side to stop Arsenal scoring in the league but still couldn't buy a goal at home. Surely that had to change against Middlesbrough?
29/12/08: Premier League Matchday #20: Pompey 0 Middlesbrough 1
A woeful Pompey side produced one of the worst performances seen at Fratton Park in a long time as Gary O'Neil returned and assisted Tuncay's eventual winner early in the game.
The Blues resorted to playing hoofball which never worked against Boro's imposing centre backs and when the full time whistle blew the team trudged off the pitch to resounding boos.
So 2007 didn't end well after a disappointing December but we had still racked up 31 points after the halfway point of the season. Nobody could have forecast what would happen in 2008 though....
