January was a tough month for Pompey as HMRC were looking to wind the club up once again and the money was running out.
On the pitch, results were steady and it seemed like Championship football next season would be able to be obtained. However, events in February made that task far more difficult.
Because of bad weather, the home match against Hull was postponed and so the first game was a midweek trip to St. Andrew's to take on Birmingham City in the freezing cold.
Having seen out much of the game comfortably, it was hard to take when Nathan Redmond struck in the 88th minute to give the Brummies a 1-0 win and send the Pompey fans back to the south coast empty handed.
The next trip would prove to be more fruitful as Erik Huseklepp scored early to give his side the lead at Blackpool in front of the Sky cameras.
Backed by a large number of supporters who were protesting at how the club had been run in the last couple of years, Pompey dominated but couldn't find a second goal and were made to pay for it as Stephen Crainey equalised with a superb free kick to end the match in a 1-1 draw.
Things began to go seriously downhill after that result as administration (and the ten point penalty) loomed ahead of the Valentine's Day match with Ipswich. A single Michael Chopra goal was enough to break our hearts on that night.
Administration was confirmed soon after with Trevor Birch and PKF being appointed administrators to oversee the mess of our football club and try and keep it afloat during the season.
The ten point penalty also hit the club and all of a sudden a defeat to Barnsley at the weekend would see Pompey drop into the Championship relegation zone.
And despite George Thorne's return on loan it would be defeat at Oakwell after Dave Kitson decided to stupidly lash out and get sent off for a second yellow card.
Pompey held on but Jim O'Brien struck late in the game and then Matt Done scored in stoppage time after a quick counter-attack. I always look back at this game and think that this was the point where we were in serious trouble having produced such a terrible display.
Trevor Birch wasted no time in reducing the club's outgoings as David Lampitt was released along with John Redgate and Nick Byrom following him, meaning Pompey had no senior board members left.
Erik Huseklepp was also loaned to Birmingham for the remainder of the season although that was offset by the arrival of the talented Scott Allan from West Bromwich Albion.
The final game of the month was a goalless draw against Neil Warnock's Leeds United. Pompey were denied a clear penalty after Darren O'Dea handled Greg Halford's long throw and that incident summed up the entire month for the club.
However, as bad as February had been, the fortunes of Portsmouth Football Club would take a nose dive over the coming weeks.
